MEDIA RELEASE
MY FIRST SPEECH COMPETITION OPENS FOR CANNING SECONDARY STUDENTS
5 August 2025
Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie MP is inviting local secondary students in Canning to take part in the House of Representatives My First Speech Competition, which was officially launched this week.
This national competition challenges students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to envision themselves as newly elected Member of Parliament and deliver a 90-second speech on a topic of their choice.
Winners from each year group, accompanied by a parent or guardian, will be flown to Canberra to deliver their speeches live at Parliament House and participate in an engaging program to deepen their understanding of Australia’s democratic process.
Mr Hastie said the competition is a unique opportunity for young people to have their say in national Parliament.
“Canning schools are full of bright, engaged students, and I’m always inspired by the passion and insight they bring to public debate,” Mr Hastie said.
“I encourage all eligible students in Canning to take part—it’s a great way to build confidence, learn more about our democracy, and have your say in Parliament.”
Entries close at 9.59pm on Monday 15th September 2025.
Students can learn more about submit their entries on the official competition website: https://mfs.houseofrepresentatives.gov.au/
