Statement: Declaration of Offshore Wind Zone

STATEMENT – DECLARATION OF OFFSHORE WIND ZONE

2 September 2024

The Labor Government has been forced to back down on key elements of its reckless Mandurah offshore wind farm proposal, following the relentless pressure and opposition from our community.

Today, the Minister for Climate Change and Energy declared the area between Cape Naturaliste and Dawesville for potential wind farm development.

In response to strong community feedback, the Government has:

  • Reduced the proposed area by nearly half
  • Removed more than 60% of area requested by recreational fishers, including Naturaliste Reef
  • Moved the wind farm further offshore to minimise visual impact (30km minimum)
  • Allowed space for safe shipping management; and
  • Increased distance from Southern Right Whale migration and breeding areas.

These adjustments are a direct response to the fierce resistance of our community, which has refused to be steamrolled by a Labor Government more focused on appeasing foreign powers than protecting its own citizens.

With over 2,600 submissions, the strength of our community’s opposition is clear.

But let’s be clear: the fight is far from over.

This week, I’ll be on the ground at my Peel Energy Forum, speaking directly with locals to hear their views on these proposed changes.

We’ve proven that when we stand together, we can drive change.

Now, more than ever, it’s crucial that every member of our community signs our petitions and raises their voice to send our clear message: We will not Labor destroy our coast.

I’m also deeply concerned about the secretive deal struck between Labor and the Chinese Government under the guise of climate change cooperation.

The Albanese Government must be transparent about this agreement, and how it plans to deliver Chris Bowen’s green agenda.

We can’t afford to let our guard down.

Now is the time to double down, stay loud, and keep the heat on this government.

And I’m committed to ensuring that our community’s voices continue to shape the future of the Peel Region.

Together, we’ll ensure Mandurah’s future is protected from those who would sell it out.
