Joint Statement: Release of the Defence Industry Development Strategy

THE HON LUKE HOWARTH MP

SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE PERSONNEL
JOINT STATEMENT
RELEASE OF THE DEFENCE INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY
Thursday 29 February 2024
The Coalition welcomes the release of the long-awaited Defence Industry Development Strategy (DIDS), despite the months long delay from the Albanese Government.
The DIDS has been much anticipated since the release of the Defence Strategic Review over 300 days ago, which was meant to provide clarity for Australian defence industry – instead it resulted in cuts, confusion and delays.
It is hoped that today’s announcement will provide guidance and assurance to Australian defence industry, which has been degraded under the Albanese Government.
The Opposition stands with defence industry in calling for the prompt release of a fully funded Integrated Investment Program, to allow industry to plan and invest with confidence.
The Albanese Government must also explain how the $183.8 million in increased funding for grants programs will be funded, and whether it will result in further cannibalisation of Defence.
The Opposition will take the appropriate time to digest the outcomes of the Defence Industry Development Strategy and welcomes the opportunity to be briefed on this matter.
