Joint Statement - Labor Fails to Keep Australians Safe

THE HON ANDREW HASTIE MP
SHADOW MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS

SENATOR PAUL SCARR
SHADOW MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION

JOINT MEDIA STATEMENT

29 June 2025

LABOR FAILS TO KEEP AUSTRALIANS SAFE

This is an admission of a catastrophic failure of the Albanese Government.

They repeatedly assured Australians they could keep the community safe. Now, after rushing through a preventative regime 18 months ago, they admit it doesn’t work at all. This Government has spent more than $20 million on its flawed community safety regime and doesn’t have a single application to show for it.

For over a year the Coalition has been demanding details of how the community will be shielded from the 335 hardened criminals that have been released into the community on the Albanese Labor Government’s watch – most of which are not even being electronically monitored.

What contingencies has the government put in place? Today, we discover the answer is none.

They have thrown up their hands, put it in the too hard basket.

The Minister must explore every available option to protect the community from this cohort.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon. Andrew Hastie MP:

“The government must act immediately to keep Australians safe. We don’t accept that there is nothing that can be done, and the Coalition stands ready to assist if urgent legislation is required to clean this mess up and keep these dangerous individuals off our streets.”

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Immigration, Senator Paul Scarr:

“We are talking here about the risk posed to the Australian Community by convicted serious, violent or sexual offenders who are not citizens. What is the government proposing to do to address the situation? Community safety must be paramount.”
