MEDIA RELEASE: LABOR CAN’T EVEN PRONOUNCE PEEL SUBURBS, LET ALONE DELIVER FOR THEM

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CANNING
SHADOW MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS
MEDIA RELEASE
LABOR CAN’T EVEN PRONOUNCE PEEL SUBURBS, LET ALONE DELIVER FOR THEM
25 June 2025
Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie MP has slammed the WA Labor Government for being completely out of touch with the Peel Region after comments made by Labor members at the recent Peel Region Budget Breakfast.
Minister for Peel Jessica Stojkovski repeatedly mispronounced key local suburbs—calling Coodanup “Coondanup” and Edenvale “Evandale”.
Mr Hastie said it shows how disconnected the Minister is from the Peel community she claims to represent.
“This is a Minister who doesn’t live in the Peel Region—she’s been parachuted into the portfolio so the WA Government can pretend it cares about our community,” Mr Hastie said.
“She’s still not across the basics. It’s completely patronising for locals who have been waiting years for upgrades to the Peel Health Campus. If the Minister doesn’t even know the names of our suburbs, how can locals trust her to fix the Peel Health Campus?” Mr Hastie said.
Mr Hastie also pointed to remarks made at the same event by Labor’s own Member for Mandurah, Rhys Williams MLA, who casted doubt on the State Government’s funding commitment for the Peel Health Campus.
Mr Williams told guests: “The $152 million that was committed to the budget for the redevelopment, everyone knows that that’s not going to cover the cost of the redevelopment… this is for the forward works, that is to get the project started, get the power there, get the works done so that the project can get under way.”
Mr Hastie said it was telling that even Labor MPs admit there’s not enough money to get the hospital upgraded.
“The Peel Region deserves better than spin and shortfalls. The funding doesn’t stack up, the upgrade is years overdue, and we’ve got MPs who can’t even name our suburbs—let alone deliver the hospital upgrades we’ve been promised,” Mr Hastie said.
“We’re still left wondering—when will the redevelopment actually start, and how much will it cost?”
