Lakelands Train Station Tracking In The Right Direction
THE HON. ANDREW HASTIE MP - SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE - FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CANNING
MEDIA RELEASE
LAKELANDS TRAIN STATION TRACKING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
Wednesday 28 October 2022
Federal Member for Canning, the Hon. Andrew Hastie MP, has visited to the site of the hard-fought Lakelands train station, with the building shell nearing completion.
Under the former Coalition government, Mr Hastie secured $64 million for the project – 80 per cent of the total cost – following a grassroots campaign which began in 2017.
Mr Hastie said he was pleased to see the project tracking along well.
“Residents in Lakelands have waited a long time for a train station to be built in their neighbourhood. Many bought their first home – or chose to retire in Lakelands – because one was promised as part of the development,” Mr Hastie said.
“The Liberal party was the only major party to support this project and we delivered $64 million of the $80 million needed to build the Lakelands train station.
“Let’s not forget Labor, including Member for Mandurah, David Templeman, had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the table. They opposed this important project every step of the way at both state and federal levels.
“I fought hard for our train station and I’m proud to say that together, our community delivered.
“This new station will be a game changer for the northern suburbs of Mandurah.”
The Lakelands train station is due to be up and running in mid-2023.
