200 LOCALS ATTEND PEEL ENERGY FORUM AMID RISING ENERGY COSTS
9 September 2024
Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie MP welcomed the Shadow Minister for the Environment, Senator the Hon Jonno Duniam, in Mandurah on Friday night for the highly anticipated Peel Energy Forum.
Joined by the Liberal candidate for Dawesville, Owen Mulder, the Energy Forum was attended by 200 locals.
Mr Hastie told attendees that times were tough for the local community under the Albanese Government, and there needed to be a plan to address rising energy costs.
“We’ve seen electricity bills skyrocketing, placing a heavy burden on families and small businesses in the Peel Region,” Mr Hastie said.
“At a time when the Labor Government is pursuing their green agenda and trying to meet their 82% renewables target, we actually need more affordable and reliable energy solutions that don’t result in higher costs for Australians.”
Local issues raised in the forum included the Government’s proposal for an offshore wind farm between Dawesville and Cape Naturaliste, renewable energy, and the economic impact of Labor’s energy targets.
Senator Duniam echoed these concerns and emphasised the need for the Government to listen to locals who have opposed the project.
“There is huge local opposition to this project, for a wide range of reasons,” Senator Duniam said.
“It’s a very powerful message for us and we hope the Government also hears it.”
The event reached maximum capacity shortly after its announcement.
Mr Hastie will be joined by Owen Mulder at his next Peel Energy Forum on 3 October.
