MEDIA RELEASE
COMPANIES ABANDONING OFFSHORE WIND FARM A REFLECTION OF COMMUNITY OPPOSITION
30 January 2025
Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie says the decision by at least three companies to withdraw from the Albanese Government’s offshore wind farm project in Western Australia is further proof that the proposal should be scrapped.
Alinta Energy, Oceanex Energy and Skyborn Renewables have all confirmed they will not proceed with the project, with Oceanex citing delays with east coast developments as the reason for their decision.
The application deadline for developers has already been pushed back twice, fuelling speculation that interest in the project is declining.
The wind farm, which would be located between Dawesville and Cape Naturaliste, was reduced in size in September 2024 in response to strong community backlash.
Mr Hastie said the lack of interest of key proponents reiterated the project’s deep flaws.
“This project was flawed from the start—the Albanese Government pushed it through without proper consultation and in the face of overwhelming local opposition,” Mr Hastie said.
“Now, it appears even the industry is walking away from it. We shouldn’t be surprised—these big global corporates are shrewd: they’ve seen President Trump win a fresh mandate from the American people for investment in fossil fuels.”
“Big green businesses won’t be getting the extravagant government handouts anymore, and they are adapting to the new political reality.”
In October, Mr Hastie and Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton announced that an elected Coalition Government would cancel the proposed wind farm.
“It’s time for Anthony Albanese and Labor to stop wasting time and immediately scrap this project,” Mr Hastie said.
