LABOR’S EMPTY PROMISES CAN’T FIX EIGHT YEARS OF NEGLECT
16 January 2025
Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie MP has called out Labor’s latest announcement on the Peel Health Campus as “another empty gesture” that does nothing to address the urgent healthcare crisis facing the community.
This morning, Premier Roger Cook and Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson stood outside Peel Health Campus to announce a contract for ‘forward-works’ on the hospital’s redevelopment.
This is part of a $152 million project WA Labor first promised back in 2020.
Mr Hastie said trust in Labor’s promises had been eroded, and he highlighted the community’s growing frustrations.
“Labor has had eight years to fix the Peel Health Campus,” Mr Hastie said.
“What do we have to show for it? A hospital bursting at the seams, ambulance ramping at record levels, and a long list of broken promises. Our community deserves better.
“Labor loves a photo op, but when it comes to delivering for Mandurah, they’re missing in action. What the community wants to know is when they’ll stop talking and start building.”
Mr Hastie pointed to the alarming ambulance ramping figures as proof of Labor’s failure.
In September 2024, ambulances were ramped for a staggering 456 hours, even after the Peel Health Campus was handed back to the Labor State Government in August.
Already, January 2025 has seen 107.3 hours of ramping—and the month isn’t even over.
“Labor’s inability to deliver basic health services is costing lives,” Mr Hastie said.
“In 2019, I secured $25 million to expand the emergency department—that’s the only significant investment this hospital has seen in years. Labor keeps making announcements, but it’s the people of Mandurah who keep paying the price for their incompetence.”
Mr Hastie is urging locals to sign his petition calling on the Labor State Government to stop stalling and fix the Peel Health Campus.
The petition has already gained 5,129 signatures.
“It’s time for Labor to put the people of Mandurah first. No more excuses, no more empty promises—just get it done.”
