MEDIA RELEASE
LOCAL MP DEMANDS ACTION ON HOUSING SHORTAGE AS HOMELESSNESS SOARS IN MANDURAH

21 November 2024

Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie MP has reiterated his urgent called for the WA Labor Government to take action on housing and homelessness.

Analysis from Shelter WA, the state's leading housing advocacy group, has revealed the pressing need for 85,000 new homes by 2041 to accommodate WA's growing population.

The shortage is most severe in Mandurah, where 180 additional homes are required annually to meet local demand.

Mr Hastie has criticised the local Peel Labor team, including Mandurah MLA David Templeman, Dawesville MLA Lisa Munday, and Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke, for their failure to address the social and affordable housing crisis in the region.

“In September, 179 people in Mandurah were experiencing homelessness, including 107 individuals sleeping rough. These figures are deeply concerning and entirely unacceptable,” Mr Hastie said.

“Without action from the WA Labor Government, more Western Australians will face homelessness as the cost of living continues to rise.”

Western Australia has more than 20,000 households on a waitlist for social housing with more and more people priced out of the private rental market leaving the state with a short supply to meet demand.

“There’s a whole wave of people doing it really tough at the moment – people who have never needed support before, but who simply can’t make ends meet in this current climate,” Mr Hastie said.

“WA Labor must step up and address this urgent issue.”
