NATIONAL YOUTH PARLIAMENT LAUNCHED FOR CANNING SECONDARY STUDENTS

13 February 2025

High school students across Canning will have the chance to represent their community on the national stage, with the launch of the National Youth Parliament this week in Canberra.

The program will see 150 students—one from each Federal electorate—selected to participate in a three-day program at Australia’s Parliament House, where they will experience the workings of government first-hand.

Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie MP welcomed the initiative and encouraged local students to take the leap and apply.

“This is a really exciting opportunity for young people in Canning to step up, have their voices heard, and gain a deeper understanding of how our democracy works,” Mr Hastie said.

“Our local schools are full of bright and engaged students who are eager to lead, grow, and serve their country. I look forward to seeing a local student take on this role and bring their perspectives to Canberra.”

Participants will learn about all aspects of being a Member of Parliament, including how legislation is drafted, debated in Parliament, and passed into law.

Applications for the National Youth Parliament will open in the second half of the year. Mr Hastie’s office will provide more details to Canning schools when applications are available.
