Media Release: WA Labor Still Failing the People of Canning

SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE

MEDIA RELEASE
13 August 2024
WA LABOR STILL FAILING THE PEOPLE OF CANNING
Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie MP has again expressed deep concern about the lack of infrastructure upgrades to the Peel Health Campus, calling the WA Labor Government’s handover of the facility to the South Metropolitan Health Service a “hollow gesture” and an “empty move that means nothing”.
“I still remain seriously concerned about the Peel Health Campus’ ability to meet the health needs of Mandurah and its surrounding suburbs,” Mr Hastie said.
“My office receives regular accounts from residents who have suffered terrible experiences there—ambulance ramping is at its highest point all year, and emergency wait times are completely unacceptable.”
Addressing Parliament yesterday for the twelfth time on this issue, Mr Hastie said that despite promises from WA Labor to upgrade the facility, nothing has changed.
“We were told by the Peel Labor team that everything would be different and that everything would change for the better,” Mr Hastie said.
“I’ve talked to our hardworking doctors and nurses. They’ll be on shift, serving our community, but nothing will change for them.
“We are yet to see any significant investment into the hospital except for the $25 million that I secured in 2019 for upgrades to the emergency department.
“My community—from Mandurah to Pinjarra and from Waroona to Dawesville—wants action.”
The Peel Health Campus transitioned to public hands as of 13 August 2024, with South Metropolitan Health Service managing and operating the hospital.
