MEDIA RELEASE
PROPOSED REDISTRIBUTION OF CANNING ELECTORATE ANNOUNCED BY AUSTRALIAN ELECTORAL COMMISSION
Friday 31 May 2024
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has today released the proposed redistribution for the Federal electorate of Canning.
Redistributions are regularly undertaken by the AEC to ensure that electorates all have a similar number of electors, in par with local growth rates.
The AEC announced in October 2023 that the number of electorates in Western Australia would increase from 15 to 16, which would lead to many – including Canning – being altered to some degree.
The proposal for Canning sees the removal of the southern suburbs of Preston Beach, Lake Clifton, Waroona, Hamel, Wagerup, Nanga Brook, and the northern suburbs of Bedfordale, Ashendon, Lesley, Roleystone, Karragullen, Martin, Canning Mills, Carmel, and Pickering Brook.
The AEC has added the suburbs of Singleton, Karnup, Keralup, Golden Bay, and Secret Harbour to the Canning electorate.
Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie MP said while the proposal is still pending finalisation, he was looking forward to reaching out to his new constituents and representing their views and concerns in Canning.
“I know many people living in the new areas of Canning are struggling with cost of living, they’re concerned about local crime, immigrations rates, and housing availability and affordability – and I can assure them that I will work the best I can with them to address these important issues,” Mr Hastie said.
“It has been an honour to represent the suburbs that have been removed and I want the community to be assured that I will continue to represent them until the next Federal Election.”
Mr Hastie is encouraging anyone who has questions about the redistribution to reach out to his office, who can be contacted on 08 9534 8044 or [email protected].
