MEDIA RELEASE

LOCAL MP REFLECTS ON NATIONAL FLAG DAY

3 September 2025

Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie MP is calling on Australians to reflect on the enduring significance of the national flag—a symbol of sovereignty, sacrifice, and shared identity.

Today—September 3—is National Flag Day, marking the first time the Australian Flag was flown in 1901.

Mr Hastie said since 1901, the flag has flown over schools, workplaces, homes, and battlefields—uniting Australians across generations.

“Our flag is a banner of unity, flown in both war and peace, under which more than 103,000 Australians have fought and died. It’s the flag I served under in uniform, and the flag I now serve under in Parliament.”

“We are one country, and we have one flag. It belongs to all Australians and represents our democratic values, our freedoms, and the sacrifices made to protect them. It’s not something to apologise for—it’s something to stand up for.”

Mr Hastie encouraged Australians to mark National Flag Day by proudly flying the flag and reaffirming their commitment to the values that unite the nation.

Australians can order an A3 Together Under One Flag bin sticker on Mr Hastie’s website:
