Statement: National Flag Day

HON ANDREW HASTIE MP

STATEMENT ON NATIONAL FLAG DAY

3 September 2025

Today on National Flag Day, we recognise the first time our national flag was flown in 1901—as a symbol of our sovereignty, our sacrifice, and our shared identity as Australians.

Our flag is more than fabric. It’s a banner of unity, flown in war and peace, under which more than 103,000 Australians have fought and died. It’s the flag I served under in uniform, and the flag I now serve under in Parliament.

Our national identity is under pressure. The left continues to challenge the legitimacy of our flag—pushing division, rewriting history, and promoting the idea that we are a country of three flags.

Let me be clear: we are one country, and we have one flag.

The Australian flag belongs to all of us. It represents our democratic values, our freedoms, and the sacrifices made to protect them.

It’s not something to apologise for—it’s something to stand up for.

On this National Flag Day, I encourage all Australians to fly our flag proudly. Let’s reject division and reaffirm our commitment to the values that unite us.
