STATEMENT
AUSTRALIA–UNITED KINGDOM BILATERAL TREATY

Friday 27 September 2024

The Coalition welcomes the beginning of negotiations between Australia and the United Kingdom which will reportedly accelerate the design, build and delivery of SSN-AUKUS.

As the founders of AUKUS, the Coalition continues to support this important partnership alongside our closest allies.

However, there is a lack of detail and transparency around this announcement which the Albanese Government should disclose in the public interest.

While we acknowledge there is a degree of confidentiality that must occur, Defence Minister, Richard Marles, must disclose any costs associated with this new treaty, and assure the Australian people that AUKUS is progressing on time and on budget.

AUKUS is a nation building, multi-generational endeavour that requires the support of government, industry, the private sector and a range of other areas. It will bring great opportunities for generations of Australians.

The Albanese Government must be honest with and engage the Australian people as we work together to achieve AUKUS.
