Statement: Labor Scraps Green Aluminium Production Credit Scheme

THE HON ANDREW HASTIE MP
SHADOW MINISTER FOR INDUSTRY AND SOVEREIGN CAPABILITY
FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CANNING
STATEMENT
LABOR SCRAPS GREEN ALUMINIUM PRODUCTION CREDIT SCHEME
Tuesday 1 September 2026
Just 18 months after announcing $2 billion of taxpayer Green Aluminium Production Credits, it seems Labor’s scheme no longer exists.
The Albanese Government has reportedly cannibalised their own scheme to fund the bailout of Tomago and Boyne.
It comes weeks after Labor’s Member for Bass let slip that Tasmania’s Bell Bay Aluminium would be excluded from the now non-existent scheme.
Meanwhile, the Albanese Government continues to bicker with the Tasmanian state government over who will help fund a new power deal for the Tasmanian smelter.
Industrial policy under the Albanese Government is a shambles.
In January last year, Minister Tim Ayres assured heavy industry that the scheme was “absolutely designed for every Australian aluminium facility.”
Less than two years on, and the credits our aluminium facilities were promised no longer exist.
Labor is using Australian taxpayers’ money to subsidise their reckless Net Zero rollout and bailout Australian industry.
This is what a “future made in Australia” look like under the Albanese Government.
