Statement: Labor Leaves Nyrstar Jobs at Risk

THE HON ANDREW HASTIE MP
SHADOW MINISTER FOR INDUSTRY AND SOVEREIGN CAPABILITY
FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CANNING

STATEMENT

LABOR LEAVES NYRSTAR JOBS AT RISK

Friday 1 May 2026

The Albanese Government must immediately work with Nyrstar to avoid closure after disgracefully letting negotiations break down, leaving more than 1,000 jobs at risk.

Despite touting its Future Made in Australia policy, the reality is that under Labor, Australia’s manufacturing capacity is collapsing.

The Albanese Government’s radical push to Net Zero has driven electricity prices up 38 per cent, resulting in the bailout of Nyrstar’s smelters, Boyne aluminium smelter, Whyalla steelworks, Glencore’s Mount Isa copper smelter and the Tomago aluminium smelter.

Only months ago, the Industry Minister boasted that the Albanese Government was backing Australian critical minerals and local jobs. Today, Nyrstar faces closure and more than 1,000 local jobs are at risk.

Labor's Future Made in Australia is nothing but empty words.
