Statement: Release of Alleged PLA Propaganda Video

THE HON ANDREW HASTIE MP
SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE
SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE INDUSTRY
SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE PERSONNEL
STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE OF ALLEGED PLA PROPAGANDA VIDEO

Wednesday 18 September 2024

The release of an alleged People’s Liberation Army (PLA) propaganda video which shows a Royal Australian Air Force P-8 Poseidon being intercepted by a Chinese fighter, and being referred to as the “enemy”, is deeply troubling.

This dangerous and risky behaviour displayed by the PLA endangered the lives of our Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who were fortunate to avoid any injuries during the encounter.

It is a reminder of the continued aggression shown towards the ADF by the PLA. This is not the actions of a friend.

The release of the alleged propaganda video must be condemned at the highest levels – something the Albanese Government has consistently failed to do.

The Coalition calls on the Prime Minister to stand up for Australia’s best interests, and our ADF personnel, and raise this matter when he next meets with President Xi.

We must show strength in the face of aggression.
