STATEMENT – ROBYN CLARKE MLA MISLEADING CONSTITUENTS OVER PINJARRA ROAD PROJECT

Tuesday 21 May 2024

In 2019, with the backing of the local community, I secured $200 million from the former Coalition Government for a much-needed road safety project – the Pinjarra Heavy Haulage Deviation.

But late last year, in a devastating blow to Pinjarra residents, the Albanese Government shamefully axed this critical project.

At the time, local MLA Robyn Clarke took to Facebook to assure her constituents that the “Cook Labor Government has stepped in and will cover the Federal Government’s original contribution”.

But WA Labor’s State budget, handed down earlier this month, tells a different story.

Instead of supporting the project, the Labor’s budget has slashed $200 million in funding.

When I highlighted the new funding cut on social media, Ms Clarke retorted: “If you could read a Budget you will see the $250m is on Page 603 in BP2.”

Unfortunately for Robyn, I can read a budget paper.

While the budget correctly notes the project’s estimated total cost of $250 million, the Cook Government has allocated only $40 million from the 2024-25 budget onwards.

This allocation falls embarrassingly short of Ms Clarke’s promise to fully cover the $250 million.

Ms Clarke then falsely claimed on an additional social media post that the “budget includes $250m funding for the Pinjarra Heavy Haulage Deviation”.

Ms Clarke’s comments are misleading, and demonstrate a blatant lack of respect towards her constituents.

I will always be direct and clear with my constituents.
