LOCAL MP MAKES OFFICIAL SUBMISSION AGAINST OFFSHORE WIND ZONE

Member for Canning Andrew Hastie MP has made a submission to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, raising significant concerns about plans for an offshore wind area between Dawesville and Cape Naturaliste.

In his submission, Mr Hastie has warned the Department of “irreversible impacts on the future of our environment, local tourism and recreational activities, and the economy”.

Noting negative community feedback, and concerns regarding budget and energy, tourism, visual and recreation, national security, and disposal and decommissioning, Mr Hastie highlighted genuine and widespread concern among his community.

“Any project that has an impact on – or compromises – Mandurah’s waterways, wildlife and natural attractions in any way will undermine the very foundation of Mandurah’s tourism industry,” Mr Hastie’s submission warns.

“Against the current backdrop of increased regional power competition, strategic consideration must be given to any sizeable infrastructure assets off Australia’s Indian Ocean coastline.

“These considerations should include, but not be limited to, the risks to the surveillance, operation and maintenance of the asset in both peacetime and conflict.”

Residents can share their feedback by making a submission to the Department before 11:59pm (AEDT) on Friday 3 May 2024: https://consult.dcceew.gov.au/oei-bunbury/new-survey-2ecbe7ee
